The first step after you sand the hardwood floor is to apply hardwood floor stain. A good choice is Minwax Wood Finish stains, which come in a variety of floor stain colors. Putting a stain on the floor will enhance the wood grain and give it great depth. After applying the stain, give it six hours to completely dry.
After staining the floor is complete, you have a couple of options for applying hardwood floor finishes. For an oil-based product, use Minwax Super Fast-Drying Polyurethane for Floors, which will provide maximum durability and will allow you to apply another coat in just three hours without having to sand the floor between coats. This means you can apply your finish in one day. For a water based finish, Minwax offers Water Based Polyurethane for Floors. Apply three coats, and give each coat two to three hours to dry. You do not need to sand between coats. Water Based Polyurethane provides low odor, fast drying time, and easy cleanup.
If you want natural hardwood floors with no stain, apply a base coat first, such as Water Based Polyurethane for Floors Base Coat. This is because most of the woods found in floor construction contain tannins. When tannins come in contact with water, discoloration could result. A polyurethane base coat is easy to apply, dries fast, and has low odor. After applying, allow two to three hours to dry, then you can apply Minwax Polyurethane for Floors.
