Subject 1: How to restore wood chairs that have been left outside
Learn how to revive weathered wood by lightly sanding in the direction of the grain. This will remove the weathered gray top layer of the wood and restore the natural wood underneath. To protect your chair from damage in the future, use Minwax Wipe-On Poly, which comes in both an oil-based version and a water-based version. This polyurethane will give you a strong, durable finish with a natural look.

Subject 2: How to clean hardwood floors
Bruce provides tips on how to safely clean hardwood floors without damaging the finish. Minwax Hardwood Floor Cleaner is specially designed for floors and is easy to apply with a damp mop. Do not use cleaners with harsh chemicals like ammonia and bleach. Minwax Hardwood Floor Cleaner gently removes the dirt and grime that have built up on the floor over time.

Subject 3: Can you stain pressure-treated wood?
Pressure-treated wood is wood that has been treated with chemicals so that it can weather outside better than normal wood. These chemicals soak into the grain, causing the wood to often be very wet and heavy when you first buy it. Because the wood is wet from treatment, it is very difficult to get stain to absorb into fresh pressure-treated wood. In order to stain pressure-treated wood, you must first let it dry out for several months. It is recommended to use the Thompson's WaterSeal line of products designed for outdoor decks and furniture.

Minwax Polyshades is great one-step product, meaning that the stain, color, and finish are mixed together into one. Polyshades works great on flat wood surfaces and can be easily applied using a high-quality bristle brush.

If you want to have more control over the exact color of your finished wood project, it is recommended to use a two-step process. Minwax Wood Finish Stain comes in 22 colors. First, apply your stain and let this dry overnight. Come back the next day and apply a top coat of Minwax Polyurethane to add protection and lock in the exact color you desire.

Subject 5: What is the difference between water-based and oil-based wood finish products?
You may find that water-based products are slightly more expensive than their oil-based counterparts because there is more chemistry involved in creating a wate- based finish. Water-based products dry faster than oil-based products, are virtually odor free, and give the perfect clear finish.

Subject 6: How to determine what stain will look like on different types of wood
Each type of wood has a different pore structure, grain pattern, and growing style. There are many things that affect how a board accepts a stain, so the best way to determine if you like the look of the stain on your wood is to do a test. Find a small area on the piece that is unseen, like the underside of a table, to apply your test stain. Use this area to experiment on color and coats until you achieve your perfect shade.

Subject 7: What is the best stain for my stair banister?
Minwax Express Color is designed for smaller projects, so if your banister is small in size, Express Color can be used with a top coat of Minwax Polycrylic to add extra projection in this high-use area.
