In our fourteenth episode of InTheCellar, Marquee is ready to give a world perspective (with a little bit of history on the one thing standing between our beautiful wines and the outside world, the wine closure. As importers / producers of wines from new world regions such as "Australia"; where for years testing has been done on several types of closures; to old school regions such as "Portugal" where the cork industry itself makes its home, the debate on what is the best seal for your wine bottle has many different answers. Take 10 minutes and learn about a few styles, why we people are switching from the traditional "natural cork" and what other industry trends are bringing to the table.
Great video with props and more as we start today's tasting and look at closures with a lovely premium wine in a screw-cap from Marquee Australian Wines, the 2009 Marquee Organic Shiraz / Cabernet Blend from South Australia. A regal red wine blend of the top grape of Australia, Shiraz, and the the worlds king grape, Cabernet Sauvignon. The screw-cap seal on this wine ensures it stays fresh, smooth, has no cork taint and remains true to the character the winemaker intended while still being able to age gracefully for several years.
For the second wine we head back across the pond and land in the high windswept Spanish plains of Yecla, Spain. This lovely old vine wine, the 2006 Trapio Monastrell from Bodegas La Purisima is rich, deep in color and comes from a vineyard that was never "grafted over to American rootstock / a rarity in Europe after phylloxera devastated vineyards in the early 20th century. A traditional wine of the area Bodegas La Purisma therefore buys the "Reference 1" cork, the natural cork cut straight from pristine cork forests, a tight, beauty over time it gets stained a deep red from the Monastrell, but will protect the wine and keep the bottle safe as long as wine is kept in contact with the cork for moisture!
Cork, screwcap, synthetic closure or more, take the time to properly open your bottles, let the wine breath and whenever possible, keep the ceremony of opening the bottle and giving your guest a first taste in mind. It sets a great mood for the wine tasting and can catch any problem bottles before you pour a round for the whole table!
